Third Generation Family Owned and Operated
Nelson Kennels is located in Los Banos, California. It was established in 1969 by Great Grandpa Norm Nelson. His daughter Linda Azevedo continued his legacy, followed by her son Scott Azevedo. The family is supported by highly experienced management team and long-tenured staff, including U.C. Davis alumni Animal Behaviorist. We have built an outstanding reputation throughout the nation and serving a multi generational and loyal client base all while continuing to expand.
Services Offered
We offer pet boarding, grooming, training and rehoming. As well as lessons for pet owners, private pet park rentals, and hosting/competition in AKC events.
DOG BOARDING
Uniquely our boarding services cater towards in-tact dogs and bitches in-heat. We accept all sizes of dogs and all breeds/mixes, of any age.
DOG GROOMING
We specialize in offering "fox-tail" cut grooming which involve shaving the hairs between the toes and pads of the feet, the armpits and groin where weeds and sticks may accumulate during outdoor adventures.
DOG TRAINING
Our dog training specializes in gun dogs and pointing breeds. All three generations are professional AKC handlers and have produced numerous Field Champions and Master Hunters. Routinely dogs under our training are ranked top ten in the nation for their breed in AKC pointing dog hunt tests and field trials. Obedience is the proven foundation of success, with an ethical approach that gives each dog their own sense of autonomy and choice.
In addition to providing care, breeding, and rehoming of dogs, we also practice professional husbandry of fowl. Furthermore, we are expert horse trainers and handlers, and experienced with other livestock including cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs. We also have experience in husbandry of exotics such as rabbits and snakes.
Our structure specifically maintains each animal is individually kenneled and crated. Interaction with other animals is in a controlled setting where each animal is handled by a trainer.
Our Facilities
Situated on over 58 acres between two locations, Nelson Kennels and Volta Farms is the largest Central California facility dedicated to your pet needs.
Strategically positioned along Interstate 5 and Highway 152, we offer outstanding regional accessibility and proximity to the Bay Area. This allows us to remain convenient to major population centers, employment hubs, and expanding residential communities throughout Central California.
Adding tremendous value and flexibility are on-site residences, providing for owner occupancy, employee housing, management accommodations, and expanded operational support.
At the heart of the Kennels are three purpose-built boarding facilities featuring a total of 57 indoor/outdoor large animal kennels and 20 indoor small animal cages. A comprehensive array of amenities designed to support high-volume operations while maintaining exceptional standards of care include climate controlled accommodations, automatic outdoor kennel run sprinkler/mister cooling systems, comprehensive video monitoring system, and so much more combine to create a first-class environment for both pets and staff. Our layout and infrastructure is designed for in-tact dogs and females that are in heat, with each dog housed and handled individually.
Additionally there is a 5 stall shaded livestock paddock that attaches to over 5 acres of fenced irrigated permanent pasture. This historical established location has towering cottonwood and eucalyptus trees that offer lots of shade.
We also have two incubators and a brooder room with the capacity to hatch 1,000 chicks.
At the farm property there is 50 acres of perimeter fenced fields that are maintained for the safety of pets in mind. The field includes two shallow watering pools that are piped with clean drinking well water. There are over 1,000 trees and and assortment of local flora that is dedicated to supporting local wildlife. Additionally there are four aviaries with a capacity for 800 birds.
